Solar panels for domestic buildings in Conservation Areas
Placing solar panels on the roof of your house or flat, or a building within the grounds of your house or flat, is usually ‘Permitted Development’ and does not require planning permission provided they meet certain conditions – for example:
- sited so as to minimise its effect on the external appearance of the building;
- sited so as to minimise its effect on the amenity of the area; and
- are removed as soon as reasonably practicable when no longer needed.
Planning permission is required for solar panels on a wall facing the road or on a listed building.If you are in any doubt about whether you need permission then you should seek further advice from the Council.
More details on when planning permission might be required can be found here.
