Congratulations to the Oxton History Society who were recently awarded the prestigious Wirral Horn Award. This award is given annual by the Wirral History and Heritage Association to an individual or organisation who had made an exceptional contribution to the field of Wirral History and Heritage.
Society members are Helen, Dave, Moira, Jo, Rowena, Bob, Gillian and Paul and each year they undertake a wide range of activities. They organise around twenty history Walks and have annual total of some 200 participants. They produce four Periodicals each year based on original research. They are involved in the placing of Blue Plaques, accompanied by interesting Booklets about the people commemorated. We also give talks on notable Oxton folk. Edith Smith Britain’s first woman police officer, Jessie Gavin celebrated artist and illustrator and Oxton Pubs are three favourites.
